The Welsh Stones That Became Stonehenge Research suggests that the earliest inner stone circle at Stonehenge was actually a rebuilt monument. The smaller bluestones appear to have first stood between 3400 and 3200 BC at Waun Mawn in the Preseli Hills of West Wales. Centuries later, these stones were dismantled, carried more than 140 miles, and raised again on Salisbury Plain by Neolithic people who may have been moving with their ancestral monument. Archaeologists found empty stoneholes at Waun Mawn that match the diameter of Stonehenge\u2019s earliest layout, and the Welsh circle aligned with the midsummer solstice sunrise just as Stonehenge does. Soil dating shows the stones were moved a few hundred years after their first placement, fitting the earliest construction phase of Stonehenge. While the larger sarsen stones came later and from a different region, the bluestones likely began their journey as part of this older Welsh circle. #Archaeology #AncientBritain #Stonehenge #History
