I am deeply saddened to learn that Fr Gustavo Gutierrez OP, had returned to the Father\u2019s House last night. He was a true advocate for the poor. Father Gutierrez was truly loved by the poor in his native Peru and by God. His book a \u201cTheology of Liberation\u201d shaped modern contemporary theological discourse. I had the profound and singular joy of meeting him and listening to him speak when I lived in Mexico as a young priest in the 1990s. His writings on a \u201cpreferable option for the poor\u201d had a profound effect on my work as a priest. \u201cFaith is not limited to affirming the existence of God. No, faith tells us that God loves us and demands a loving response. This response is given through love for human beings, and that is what we mean by a commitment to God and to our neighbour.\u201d Descansa en paz querido Padre Gustavo.
